Letting people know

After setting up this site last night, I emailed lots of people to tell them about it - thanks to all of you who have filled in the survey so far. There were a number of new issues mentioned in the survey, these include:
  • At night there are large number of youths on the street, causing trouble and just being a general nuisance
  • Boy racers
  • Slow moving people (well at least they are out walking - ljk )
  • Uneven pavements
  • The slippery bricks on Cuba St/Courtenay Place
  • When it's pouring with rain, not much shelter
  • Volume of hoardings cluttering the inner city footpaths and the apparent lack of monitoring by the council.
  • Courier cyclists using the inner city footpaths.
  • The traffic and lack of pedestrian crossings

On the positive side, the comments about what was enjoyable about walking in Wellington included the following:

  • the centre of the city is quite small, so its easy to get to the majority of amenities quickly. There is also a good energy about the city, unlike most larger cities
  • variety of scenery, easy way to get to places
  • Fresh air, thinking time
  • Lots of fresh air, interesting people watching and amazing views
  • All of the people. You can walk from one place and then in 10 minutes you will be in a completely different environment. Sights and culture and art around Wellington. Awesome on a sunny day!
  • The views of the harbour and the greenery. Quick to get through CBD as compact.

I was prepared to complain about the time it takes to complete work on footpaths, citing the upgrade of the (one) footpath on Mysore Street which has taken weeks. However I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find the work completed and all the obstacles removed - many thanks to the Council for creating a nice, even surface.

Please send details of this site to the people you know - the more comments I get, the more representative of the community's views I can be in the submission.

Wellington is a fantastic city to walk around as it's compact, relatively safe and has some amazing spaces (e.g. the waterfront and the many parks).

It is a vibrant city and it's good to see so many people walking around unlike many other cities. I like the Wellington attitude of lets walk rather than catch a bus.

Love that Wellington has both flat and hills to be able to get the most of stunning views.

Lunchtime excercise is so simple in Wellington, with place like the botancial gardens and mt vic within easy reach.

Love the councils plan to keep the 'golden mile'. I've lived in Auckland for many years and the city is horrible! No one goes there.

On the downside, can be a lot of young folk hanging around places like manners mall at night causing trouble.
